1984 was a turning point for the Berlin S-Bahn. In the western part of the city, the local transport authority - the BVG – took over the service from the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR. Even more routes were shut down, but on others comprehensive modernization gradually began.
The voluntary Berlin passenger association was involved in the concepts and planning. At the same time, there was the opportunity to salvage a lot of old things and thus protect them from vandalism or decay.

The desire to preserve the history of the S-Bahn in a museum arose. The predecessor of the Deutsche Bahnkundenverband DBV e.V. therefore founded the Berlin S-Bahn-Museum in the spring of 1989. At first, it was nothing more than an idea and an effort to recover as many old signs, signals and other artifacts as possible. Then – in the same year - the Berlin Wall fell and soon an even more extensive renewal began. The Deutsche Reichsbahn and its successors supported the collection. A basic agreement was reached with the new association Historische S-Bahn e.V. and the leisure group Bahnstromanlagen in the Bahnsozialwerk in order to support each other and not to compete.
The informal motto of the S-Bahn-Museum was formulated: "We collect everything - except vehicles".

Since then, the collection, which was presented to the public in 1996 for the first time on around 500 square meters in a former substation in Potsdam Griebnitzsee, has been continuously expanded and the presentation improved - all this on a voluntary basis and without public financial support. Deutsche Bahn AG and S-Bahn Berlin GmbH were nevertheless important partners. Special exhibitions elsewhere complemented the activities.

In 2016, quite surprisingly, the museum had to come to an end. What had not been a problem for 20 years, now appeared to be an imminent danger to life and limb. Strict, not entirely understandable fire protection requirements no longer allowed further operation of the museum. It was time to say goodbye and to look for new premises.
